A GD Experience

Gary Danko.  Everyone woos and ahhs when you said you've dined there. It's like pinning a star to your lapel.  I have been wanting to check it out but never had the chance.  For starter, there is a two-month waiting list for a table.

At last, I got to visit last night with my buds.  What's the occasion?  Just because the girls want to get together and to splurge a little.

What an Experience!  Our party was super lucky.  We were able to reserve a private room without room charge because we booked for the right date and for the right time.

The menu is long and extensive.  The amazing part is that GD lets each guest "design" his/her own courses from appetizer to dessert.  I can imagine the work and the control that go on in the kitchen.  Each dish is prepared with detail and all of the dishes come out at the same time. No miscues.  And to think, they do this every single night for every single party.

Everyone is a VIP.  Not only the wait team professional, they are attentive.  They know when to step in and when to leave you alone.  Water and bread are promptly replenished without being asked.  Yes, this is basic service but how many times we have to look around and wave for attention in restaurants? Not here.

We got out of the restaurant feeling pampered -  like after a good massage.  I'm sure all the guests walk out feeling that way.  I ask myself. how they do it?  What makes GD one of the best?  Why couldn't all restaurants be this way?

What have I learned?  To be great in anything, you must have the passion to execute at the highest level, and I think the hardest part is to do it day in and day out. I think most of us fail on the consistency part. You really need to have a strong well for it.

So much to enjoy.  So much to learn.  What an experience!!

Same Photo for 30 Years

I read a lovely story on cnn.com today. It's about a group of 5 friends who made a promise to each other that they would take a photo at the same place with the same pose every 5 years. They started this tradition in 1982 and they have been going at it for 30 years. They now have 6 photos to show off.

The story reminds me of my buds. Even though we don't have a photo tradition, we have plenty of photos to document our friendship and the passage of time.

Yes, our look have changed. We went from teenieboppers to middle age women and our lives took us to different paths in the past 30 some odd years. We don't even have a chance to see much of each other, yet, every time we meet, it's just like we just saw each other yesterday.

These 5 gentlemen made a pact and they stuck to it. Their photos are heart warming. Everyone should take a good read of their story and be grateful for the friends you have made in your life.

Friendship. Commitment. Frozen moment. Unstoppable time. Life-long memories. Just priceless.

Me and My Buds

Old Friends are special.  They are the ones who grow up with you and who are there in every stage of your life.  They laugh and cry with you; they share your happiness and sadness; they help celebrate your life milestones.  When you are lucky to have Old Friends.  Hold them tight.  They are precious.

My old buds are from my childhood.  We all went to the same high school.  Some of us went to the same elementary and junior high.  We hung out as little girls, and we still hang out as adult women.  Our conversation topics evolved from homework, exams, puppy love, going out, boyfriends, family/parents, college, work, marriage, children/husband (for me, boyfriend still) to the latest: middle age, wrinkles and the unthinkable: menopause!!  Ugh!!

We joked that we will be talking about Social Security, Medicare, high blood pressure medicine and grandchildren soon. I can't imagine us talking about the senior stuff (not just yet).  But, I know that day will come eventually, and I'm glad that I'll have my old buds to share my sunset years with me then.

XXOO to my Old Buds! (I'll add pictures as I find them).

We Are the World

This has been a heart wrenching week watching the events of the disaster in Japan. There is absolutely nothing we can ever plan and prepare for events like this.

When disasters happen, especially the natural ones, it reminds us that it’s not THEY who are suffering; it’s US – all living things on this planet – suffering from something that’s so non-preventable and non-stoppable.

People from around the world are helping out to the extent of their capability. Some donate money and goods; some donate time and expertise, and some put themselves in danger to save others.

The little dog that stood by his injured canine friend shows that all creatures have compassion, loyalty and love for each other. So, treasure our lives, treasure the friendships and treasure the time that we share with each other in this world.

Cooking 101

Sign-Up for Cooking 101. The girls met up on Sunday, November 8th, for a "cooking show and tell". After exchanging cooking tips on emails, we figured it made more sense to see action than talk. And, we get to eat the food too. So gathering our pots and pans, ingredients and recipes, we met at Sandra's house.

Firs up, Sandra's Burmese Fish Curry. She used Indian curry though. Hey, which part was the Burmese part? It was excellent. Onions, tomatoes, fresh cut up fish cubes.... spicy yet not over powering. Great over rice and yes, with a glass of big red. Hurry up, Sandra. WE WANT THE RECIPE!!

Updated 06/28/11: Sandra finally sent the recipe over.  Here goes:

Recipe (cooking time 20-25 minutes):

1)  Onion
2)  Fish sauce
3)  Salt
4)  Turmeric powder
5)  Curry powder (from small clear bag: not very hot)
6)  Curry paste (box – “Cuisine from India”)  This is hot so beware!
7)  Brown sugar or ketchup
8)  Fish (any type)
9)  Tomatoes
10) Cilantro
11) Corn starch (as thickener)

Cut fish into bit size (large is good in case it breaks down) – if you like, marinate with the curry powder.
1/2 or 1 onion – cut into cubes
Tomatoes – sliced (cubes or regular sliced)

Heat pan with oil, put in the onions, stir for a few minutes then put a teaspoon of turmeric powder and a bit of salt.  A few minutes later, put in the sliced or cubed tomatoes.  You can season it with fish sauce.  Another couple minutes, put in the fish, gently stir it around.  Put in a teaspoon of curry paste (“Cuisine from India”) or curry powder.    Let it simmer for 5-10 minutes.

Taste the sauce, if not enough flavor either put in more fish sauce or if too salty, a bit of ketchup or brown sugar.  If you like a thick sauce, mix in cornstarch w/water.

Put in the cilantro during the last 5 minutes of cooking.

Next to bat, Linda and her Chicken Congee - Cantonese style. Here's her recipe.

"As for my congee, I took 5 skinless chicken legs and 2 pounds of pork with 3 slices of ginger and add water to make stock. I have about 3 cups of rice (that's the cup that you use to measure rice) and wash them and leave them in water to soak. You may add a little oil to the rice too if you like, but let it soak. I bought about 1.5 lbs of white chicken meat, but dark meat is fine too, and chopped them in thin shreds. I added salt, sugar, mgs, white pepper, rice wine, oil and corn starch to marinate the chicken. Seep the extra oil out of the stock, and then add the rice into the chicken stock, and stir with a whisk occasionally for about 15 minutes on high with the lid not covered or 1/2 covered, then turn it off and cover the lid fully and walk away. Come back in about another 15 minutes and stir with Wisk, and it should look like porridge, then turn the heat on and add uncooked chicken shreds when the congee is hot, and it's ready to serve when chicken is done. Add salt to taste. Very simple."

Simple? Really? Sounds pretty complicated... well done, Linda!! The best comfort food for a rainy day.

Then it was my turn with my Butternut Squash Soup. My lazy-man soup because it's definitely too easy...

1 butternut squash. If making more, then add more squash. No magic number... take a guess.
Cut into chunks
1 onion - also cut into small chunks. You can also add some celery, carrots or turnip... for nutrition.
Add 1 or 2 small potatoes for thickness.
Stir fry onion first, then add in other veggies and the squash. Season with salt and pepper and add a dash of paprika. You can add other herbs.
When the veggies are soft, add a can of chicken broth and I usually add enough water to cover the veggies.
Cover and let it cook for a while. When it's soft enough, blend it.
Return soup to stove, add heavy cream or half-and-half so it's smooth.
Top of with a dab of sour cream or sprinkle some blue cheese. Add some pine nuts for a crunch. Then, voila, ready to serve!

Sandy, who kept saying that she couldn't cook, presented her Linguine and Shrimp Scampi. Wow! It was totally YUMMY!! And with that All-Clad french saute pan, Sandy, we don't believe you CAN'T cook!

Melt butter and add good olive oil
add lots of chopped garlic and saute.
Add in deveined shrimp until it turns pink, use salt/pepper to your taste.
Then add lemon zest and lemon juice, toss in cooked linguine. Then add red pepper flakes and chopped parsley ( I forgot to bring them…) . Garnish w/ more chopped parsley.

Julia did not cook live for us. She brought over an already made Steamed Turnip Cake. She was excused though since it was the most complicated dish made with 4 kind of flours and it took her all night. Wow! We all want the recipe but I doubt that any of us will be making it any time soon. Julia, can you please make some more for us, please? Please? Pretty please??

So here you have it... girls' first cooking class. Flawlessly excuted. Our fine tasters with their discriminating palate- aka Sandra's family: Alland, Stephanie and Zach - gave us the thumbs up. Ahhh! Must have been good!

Bon Appetit!

It's So Hard to Say Good Bye

Dudu Keng: 5/29/1996 - 12/12/2008

Robert and I had to say good-bye to Dudu today. His kidney failed and he was not responding to treatment. Dr. Kim said best to let him go because he was suffering. Robert and I knew it was the best for Dudu but does it hurt to make that decision.

The pain was just as bad as when we had to let Max go. It never gets easier. Knowing that no one will be waiting at the door is heartbreaking. No wagging, no running in circles, no demanding for hugs and treats... life is so different without Max then and Dudu now.

Dudu. His name meant round and chubby in Chinese. Yap, he was a chubby puppy running fast on 4 stubby legs. He grew to become quite a handsome boy. He had thought that he could be the alpha dog in the house but gave up after trying for a day. Max was Mr. Alpha. Dudu wasn't sour though. He was happy to be the little brother following Max around. they were inseparable.

Dudu became our only son when Max passed away. He filled the void left by Max and eased our pain of losing Max. He faithfully kept Robert company when he worked in the wee hours. He rather stayed with Robert and sleep on the floor than in his doggy bed in the bedroom.

It's so true that dogs are man's special friends. They never complain and never ask for anything in return. We are truly lucky to be selected as their best friends.

Rest in peace, Dudu. Thank you for all the love and joy. You were a wonderful doggy and it was a privilege to be your mommy and daddy.

6 30 N, 9 30 W, Africa

Sherley IM me this morning (past midnight..., so it was yesterday). What a nice surprise! I have not heard from her in a while. I asked how's everything in the UK. She said she actually moved to Liberia! Wow! From the US to the UK to Liberia in a short 4 months time. Very gutsy of her.

Yes, I heard of Liberia. It's on the news quite a lot. But where in Africa again?

Liberia: a small country (size of Tennessee) in southern part of West Africa.

Now that I have a buddy in Liberia, I have to know something about that country. Check out The CIA World Factbook for a quick reference. One thing I learned today: Most of Liberia is tropical forests and the country gets about 160 inches of rain per year. Oops. I always thought it's a dry desert land. Sorry!

See how little I know about our world? I really need to do more reading and research. There is so much to be learned!

Perhaps, a visit to Africa is in order...

Bon Voyage!

Sue and her hubby are on this very ship cruising out to Alaska. I’ve told her that I see cruise ships in and out right outside my office window, so she said she would wave good-bye when they depart.

Blowhorn blasted loudly as the cruiseline announced its departure. This big ship backed out the pier pretty quickly and gracefully. I’m sure Sue was waving like crazy and jumping out and
down out there as I snatched these pictures.

It’s the thought that counts. Sue!! Hey, you just might catch up with Delta and Dawn – the two lost Humpback whales that finally left the San Francisco Bay on Wednesday - on your way out to the sea.

I'm Running Away

Well, after 2 years, I'm leaving my team. It has been a great ride though our team has gone through some bumpy roads.

We started with 3 and ended up with 7 - and we made a good name for HR and Payroll.

Our biggest goof was when we had to stuff checks for 2,000+ employees in 235 stores (the very first time) before the UPS truck showed up. We worked frantically and even had a plan to block the UPS truck from leaving if push came to shove. We stuffed all the checks in time but found empty envelopes and checks that had no envelopes... that was not a very pretty sight.

Our greatest accomplishment was when we had to sort 5,000+ W-2s by store numbers manually. Oh, the pains, the agonies, and the cursing... but we made it and pulled it through at the end.

Over the past two years, we lost 2 original team members and added a new one. Now I'm going, and someone will replace me... I know that she or he will be welcomed with open arms.

I wish my team the very best. They will forever have a place in my heart.
